Confessions of a Mom

Let’s face it motherhood is hard! We have to keep these little human beings alive while also trying to be a perfect mom.

We all have those moments where we feel like we have failed as a mother. I would like to share my moments of shame, my confessions of a mom.

79413660_10211962160768927_3865618472188772352_n

I have given my children wipe baths.

Ok yes, sometimes the days are exhausting and instead of a bath my kids get wiped down with a wet wipe or wash rag.

I have fed my kids cereal for dinner

Sometimes I do not want to even look at the oven to cook a meal so they get a nice bowl of cereal.

I have forgotten the sunscreen

Yes, my kids have gotten burnt by the sun because of their forgetful mother. At least they got pampered by mom with aloe and popsicles.

I have overslept

When the world was still open and the kids were in school, there were days they were late to school because of dear old mama pushing that snooze button.

I have cried in my car

When my kiddos were younger, there were those dreaded moments when both would be screaming at the same time. So yes, I have cried in the car, supermarket, Church, pretty much everywhere.

79968915_10211928234040780_1687124799534399488_n

I have lied to my children

“Yep, Chucky Cheese is closed today.”

81120847_10212070129188070_3202242618494812160_n

Even with all my shameful mom moments, I still think I am a pretty good mom. They have everything they need, they are healthy and they are loved.

Don’t be so hard on yourself moms. This Mother’s Day, sit back and enjoy being a mom. Look at those magnificent creatures you made and know that you are doing a great job.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms out there!

Curvy Girl Do’s and Don’ts

When you are a curvy girl, clothes that work for less curvy girls, do not work for us. Over the many years of being a plus-size woman, I have learned some do’s and don’ts with clothing styles.

These are my opinions and what works for my body type.

Baby Doll Shirts

american-rag-american-rag-plus-size-babydoll-top-only-at-macys-abvcad81239_zoom

Don’t

High wasted baby doll shirts do not work for women with bigger boobs. They cut through our boobs making it look like we have an extra section of fat above our belly.

71M7pHi5JGL._AC_UX425_

Don’t

Low wasted baby doll shirts will draw more attention to your midsection and make you look larger.

21742_1_

Do

Find a baby doll shirt that is cinched under the boobs and above the belly. It will accentuate your boob area and make you look thinner.

Shark Hem Tops

como-blu-womens-plus-size-tie-dye-sharkbite-hem-tee-with-lace-detail

Don’t

When I wear shorter shark hem shirts, all it does is make my hips look bigger. They tend to hug the hips, so if you have big hips like me, stay away from short shark hem tops.

51lGExCJBKL._AC_UX385_

Do

If you like the look of an uneven hemline, look for longer shark hem tops. They won’t hug your hips and flow more to add a more thinning effect.

Stripes

images (4)

Don’t

Avoid thin horizontal stripes, they add more width to your body, hence making you look bigger.

ombre-mult-dress-LT-PLD50799A-a

Do

Try wearing vertical stripes to give the illusion of being taller, if you are a shorty like me, and they make you seem thinner.

Short Sleeves

61ymUzAuCSL._AC_UX425_

Don’t

If you have larger arms, like me, avoid shirts that cut your arm off right on the flab. Shorter sleeves just make my big ole arms look even bigger and flabbier.

GUEST_be324241-6552-46e8-b3a6-c1a28f4216db

Do

Find shirts with long sleeves, that fall below the biggest part of your arm.

Dresses

363405_0000096410

Don’t

Dresses that have weird waistlines always make me look like a pumpkin. I just look frumpy. Avoid dresses that are straight-lined and cinched in awkward places.

fadd3925-f857-4274-82de-f4cf91363745

Do

I love a flowing maxi dress. It hides all my unwanted curves and gives me freedom.

Ruffles

ruffle-blouse-3

Don’t

Ruffles can add unwanted volume to your body. I always avoid tops that have ruffles in places that I don’t want more volume, such as boobs and tummy.

7161LGdNEkL._AC_UX466_

Do

If you like ruffles, find tops where the ruffles are in the right places. I love ruffled sleeves or an off the shoulder ruffle shirt is great.

Patterns

Belk

Don’t

Too many patterns on your body can add so much weight. I like to avoid prints that have a lot going on or different patterns, such as stripes and flowers.

1069076_006_1

Do

Find patterns that accentuate your body. Stay away from bold prints and add more subtle prints. I love me some Leopard print, but too much can be a bad thing.

Curvy Girl Must-Haves

12512789

Kimonos

I love Kimonos! They hide my hips and add extra to my outfits.

images (2)

Cami

Camis are great for us bigger girls. Sometimes shirts are just not long enough to cover the ole tummy, and camis come in handy to cover what I don’t want to be seen.

Graphic Tee Shirts

Graphic T-shirts are great to have. You can mix and match, wear a jacket, vest or kimono. You can dress it in a skirt, wedges and jacket, or wear pants and tennis shoes. I love having a bunch of graphic t-shirts on hand.

That is all the Do’s and Don’t I have, for now, make sure to follow me for more Curvy girl style tips and tricks!

I hope you all enjoyed my Curvy Girl Do’s and Don’ts and can use some of my tips.

Great Texas Getaways

With all of us being quarantined right now, we can’t help but think about taking a vacation.

My family enjoys waterfront properties, away from the hustle and bustle of life.

I decided to share my Texas waterfront gems my family have enjoyed over the years, full of tranquility and relaxation.

Bacliff, TX

This was an amazing vacation rental. I really had no complaints. There was so much there for my family to enjoy, such as pool table, swimming pool, fishing dock, arcade, outdoor tv and outdoor grilling. It was absolutley amazing! Only draw backs, if you are looking to swim in the ocean, it is a bay house so it’s not for swimming. The fishing was perfect though and they included fishing equipment. Also if you do have a child in a wheelchair there is little steps throughout the house, which is manageable. I highly suggest this property and suggest you take in all the sights of this amazing house.

Check out this Vrbo rental: https://t.vrbo.io/qPfLEwYfS5

Lake Livingston Cottage

This small cottage was so quaint and relaxing. Right on the water of Lake Livingston, I mean you walk off the deck and there is a beach area. The kids enjoyed swimming and playing in the beach area and I enjoyed the hammock. There is great fishing and they included a pedal boat with the rental. It is not handicapped accessible, there is an upper level where the beds are but we carried our daughter up the stairs. If you are looking for a waterfront oasis, this place is perfect.

Check out this Vrbo rental: https://t.vrbo.io/FQulh88fS5

Bolivar Peninsula

If you want something beach front, look no further. This property is beach front, with a great beach perfect for finding seashells. We went during spring break one year and it was cloudy and a bit chilly but we loved every minute of this property, we even rented an extra night. The beds were unbelievably comfortable and you could hear the waves crashing to the shore from the bedroom, with the window open. It was so relaxing and the kids loved searching the beach for seashells.

Glamping on Lake Conroe

If you want camp life without really camping, this place is perfect. You can rent a RV right by the water of Lake Conroe. There is 2 RVs you can choose from. One is beyond fancy and the other is great as well but not as extremely fancy as the other. They included kayaks and life jackets. We had a great time kayaking, making s’mores and floating in the lake. Plus there is some good fishing there as well.

I hope when the world opens back you enjoy one of these great Texas getaways!

Love your Body

It has occurred to me that I have lost sight of why I started this blog, to try to open the eyes of the world that big women are beautiful! Also, for big women to see their true beauty while I also learn to love my body the way it is.

I still love blogging about being a mom and family life, but I want to focus back on my mission, for people to accept plus size people.

I have a lot to say on this topic so I may be a bit scattered brained, but bare with me.

I can honestly say that I love being a plus size woman. Am I happy with my body 100% of the time…no. I would love to lose about 50 pounds and get in better shape so that I can take better care of my my disabled daughter. Will I ever be skinny?? No. Nor do I care about being skinny. Not that there is anything wrong with being skinny, I was just not meant to be a smaller woman.

I have always been on the chunky side, since I was a child. I was a very active kid , I played sports and took dance. I ate what every other kid was eating, but I gained weight more than the other kids.

IMG_20200415_0001

When I was in 5th grade, kids at school really started making fun of my weight. I was then aware that I was different, and of coarse different always has to be bad, right?? So, I started countless diets, battled depression, and even hated going to school.

As a child, I should not have had to deal with body image issues, no child should!

God made us all different, we are not meant to all be the same size and weight.

People are having weight loss surgeries and going on extreme diets, so that they can fit in with society. Now, I know some people have to lose weight because of health problems, do skinny people not have the same health problems??

My mom had gastric bypass years ago because her Doctor said losing the weight would make all her health problems disappear, my words, but same meaning. She lost the weight, but still has heart problems and high blood pressure.

I am done trying to fit in with society, yes I want to be healthy and I CAN be healthy and plus size. I am meant to have curves and junk in my trunk and I am gonna own it!

This message is not just for plus size women. Society puts an unrealistic standard on what a woman should look like. Some of you may have body image issues and not be overweight.

This is for all of you woman reading this. Love your bodies the way they are meant to be, own and flaunt it! Show the World we come in all shapes and sizes and ALL sizes are beautiful!

What I have learned during COVID 19

The past few weeks have been stressful, to say the least. School is closed, shelter in place has taken place, it is hard finding groceries and everyone is scared and panicked.

My family’s routine is completely out of whack and there is no structure to our days at home. I spend most days just cleaning the house since we are here making messes all day. I was really finding it hard to see any bright side to this situation until I sat back and looked at the situation from another point of view.

Through the midst of all the stress and uncertainty, I have learned things I may have never know otherwise.

* My kids just want attention

As I was going over my to-do list for the next day, I noticed my son asked my husband about cars. He was curious about how his dad knew so much about cars. My husband then told him he learned by working on them. So for the past week my husband and son have been working on his truck, because it broke down right before shelter in place, and I absolutely love seeing them bond together. My son gets so excited when he learns something new and I can tell it brings my husband joy as well. In the past, my husband would be too tired from working all day and the weekends would always be too busy. Now they have time to spend time together, hopefully, after all this is over with they will still take that time to bond over working on stuff.

I think we get so caught up in life we assume they would rather be playing on their devices, but in reality, they just need a little attention.

There are still nice people out there

Over the past month, I have seen so many people going out of their way to do nice things for others. There are some people placing blessing boxes on their doorstep with essential items for people to pick up. There are others who are doing grocery shopping for the elderly or families with a special needs child. I have seen some delivering meals to special needs families doorstep.

With all this craziness right now, I am glad there is still good in this World. I only wish I was doing more to do my part.

There will always be something to clean

Being in the house for weeks has taught me that I could clean 24 hours a day and there will always be more to clean. I feel like I have wasted time with my family by just focusing on the house. So I have learned that I need to stop worrying about the house being spotless, I mean really who is going to see it, and spend more time with my family.

I miss social interaction

Before this epidemic, I had become a bit of an introvert. I was ordering my groceries online and picking up from my car, I was using Amazon for a lot of my shopping and I spent most weekends at home. Now that is all I CAN do! I miss talking to people, I miss nights out, I miss sitting at a restaurant.

It is funny how a horrible situation can make you change your mind about the way you were living life.

So while this is a horrible experience for all of us, there is good to come from it. Enjoy family time, show people you care, stop obsessing over the small stuff and remember to enjoy life more when this is all over with.

My prayers are with all the families suffering from a loss right now and all who are sick, my heart goes out to you.

Cerebral Palsy Awareness

Today is Cerebral Palsy Awareness day. Today I decided to share with you what Cerebral palsy looks like for my daughter Ciara.

On October 8th 1999 I gave birth to an amazing human being. She was full term and I was ready to be induced so I could meet my beautiful little girl. After a medical mistake and loss of oxygen my baby girl began having seizures which led to her brain damage.

After two years of her not meeting her milestones she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

There are many types of Cerebral Palsy. Ciara is Athetoid and spastic which is a little more rare than usual.
Athetoid effects her muscle movements and can cause uncontrollable body movement and also effects her speech. She also developed Dystonia because of the Athetoid CP which led her to having Deep brain stimulation surgery.

Spastic CP is more common and it makes her muscles stiff and tight. She has had to endure countless Botox treatments to try to help the spasticity in her muscles, but it never really helped in her situation.

Neither of the types of CP she has affects her intelligence, she is super smart and listens to every word spoken. She remembers songs and will sing them to you.

Ciara cannot walk and uses a wheelchair but she does not let that stop her. She competed in special Olympics, no limitations sports and leads a special needs girl scout troop.

At twenty years old Ciara has accomplished so much in her life, with a smile in her face. If only I could be that brave.

Ciara graduated from high school, she was nominated homecoming queen and attended her prom.
Her future is so bright. I know she can do whatever she sets her heart to, with a little help from mom.

Even though Cerebral palsy looks different in every person diagnosed, one thing remains the same. They all want to be excepted and included. They suffer greatly with smiles on their face and bring happiness to all they encounter.

I cannot image my life without Ciara. There has been many tears but a lot of smiles on this journey.

Boredom Busters for Teenagers

With the widespread coronavirus pandemic schools have closed, which means our children are stuck at home with us. This is a very troubling time for us, and even more stressful not knowing what we should be doing with our children.

This is different then the summer break kids get at the end of the school year. For one, with the virus spreading we are urged to stay indoors. Which means no Movie Theaters, Zoo outings or any activities outside of our homes. Not to mention the school year is not over, so you want to make sure your child does not lose everything they have learned throughout the year.

There is so much uncertainty right now but all I am certain of is that my 13-year-old will be home a total of three weeks quarantined with me and his sister. That is if they don’t decide to close the schools down for the rest of the year.

So I have compiled a list of things you can do with your teenager at home in this troubling time.

Stay on track of Studies

I have been checking the teacher’s websites for information on what the classes were working on previously to spring break. I also heard the school will send class worksheets soon, so the kids can stay up with their work.

I also found some websites that are helping keep kids learning in this time away from school.

Camp Night Outside

My family always loves to go camping, so why not set up a tent and camp in your backyard. Getting your teen involved in setting up or helping build a fire will help keep them from their devices for a little while.

One night we had a campout and prepared our whole meal on the fire and surprisingly my son loved it and enjoyed helping the whole time.

Of coarse don’t forget the marshmallows to roast over your fire!

Movie Night

If you can’t make it to the theater, why not turn your living room into one! Make a concession stand with popcorn and candy treats and throw a bunch of blankets on the floor to enjoy some great movie time.

I love a throwback movie night, where I dig through all my old DVDs and find some good ole classic movies to watch.

Game Night

You can never go wrong with a family game night. There is always so much fun to have playing games.

Some of my family favorites are…

  • Monopoly
  • Clue
  • Twister
  • Scene it
  • Family Feud

Get the games and snacks and play all night!

DIY

So my son loves to make fluffy slime, you know with the glue and shaving cream, it is extremely messy but if it gets him off the couch I am all for it.

There are less messy DIYs you can try with your teenager.

  • Bath Bombs
  • Paint Pottery
  • Jewelry
  • Candle making
  • Soap making

Anything hands-on to keep them busy!

Gardening

Its that time of year to start those gardens and you have a free worker at home for three weeks. I love putting my son to work!

He actually likes gardening and planting his own veggies and its great exercise.

Cooking Lessons

While your cooking the millionth meal for your teenager, why not get them involved. Start teaching them how to use the kitchen.

Here are some great beginner meals or snacks.

  • Homemade Pizza
  • Homemade mac and cheese
  • Grilled cheese
  • Homemade Chicken Fingers
  • Lasagna
  • Spaghetti

Have fun in the kitchen!

Read!

Lastly and most importantly keep them reading! Reading is a great way they can keep those brains working.

You can make it a family time as well while you all read together.

Here are some great books for Middle School-aged kiddos.

  • Bridge To Terabithia

  • Where the Red Fern Grows

  • The Secret Garden

I hope some of these suggestions help with getting through these tough weeks ahead. Please stay safe these next few weeks and stay positive! We will get through this together!

6 Ways to Beat Depression

Depression sucks, plain and simple! I have suffered from anxiety and depression for a very long time, and I am done with it controlling my life.

Today I turned 36 and while some people feel happiness for their Birthday, I feel sadness. Sadness to be another year older, sadness for all I didn’t accomplish in that year, and sadness another year has flown by in the blink of an eye.

A year ago I was faced with the news that I may have cancer. After all the tests came back and I was told there was no cancer I was so thankful. At that moment I was so ready to live my life to the fullness and never take life for granted. I would be happy for every day that God blessed me on Earth. Now here I am a year later finding it hard to find my happiness and searching for myself in a sea of darkness.

My husband will ask ” Why can’t you just be happy?“, for him it is a choice to be happy, but for someone with depression it takes strength just to get out of bed daily. I ask myself the same question every day, “why can’t you just stop with this!”,What is wrong with you!”.

I want happiness and I want to feel joy again! If medication is not going to work for me, I am going to fight depression!

I have made a list of 5 ways I am going to kick depressions butt!

Exercise

I have heard that exercise is a great way to clear your mind and get rid of stress. I am going to sweat out the stress and anxiety!

Find Support

Having support to lean on is very important. In the past, I didn’t want my friends or family to know what I was going through so I hid from the world. Not anymore. I am going to reach out to my friends and lean on my family support more.

Get out of the house

This one is a biggie. Anyone with anxiety and depression knows how hard it is to get out into the World of the unknown. Trying new restaurants, overly crowded places or just simple traffic can make you want to curl up in bed. I have spent too many weekends in bed! Staying cooped up in your home may feel safe, but is adding more triggers for your depression. Such as feeling like your missing out on life or feelings of regret when you cancel an event. I am going to start getting out and doing more no matter the anxiety!

Make A Journal

I am thinking of starting a journal to keep a log of my feelings and my blessings.  A journal could be a great way to express the feelings when your down and also keep track of how you came back up.

Make a daily goal list

Make a daily goal list of achievable goals, such as take the trash out, load the washer. Keep your goal list small, don’t overdo it with a mile-long list. Reward yourself for achieving your goals, such as Mani or Pedi.

Remember to take care of yourself

It is so important to have activities or hobbies just for yourself. If you like listening to music, allow yourself time in the day just to listen to music and enjoy it. If you like painting, sign up for a painting class. Don’t feel guilty to do things for yourself.

My hopes are that by the time my 37th birthday rolls around, I will have fought my depression down and will enjoy my next birthday.

These are just my opinions, you still should consult with your doctor to have a plan of your own for fighting depression.
