10 Things You Should Know Before Moving to the Country

Here lately, I’ve noticed a lot of city folk moving to the country.

I have lived the country life, for most of my life.

There is so many great things about rural living. Such as, peace and quiet, solitude, and the beauty of nature.

Yet, I wonder how many of you considering country life, really know what country life intells.

So, here are my top 10 things you should know before moving to the country.

1. There are Many Unpleasant Smells

When you live in the country, you have to factor in the awful smells of rural living.

There are life stock everywhere, and they don’t smell pretty. We live across the street from a cow feed lot, and let me tell you, the smells are not for the meek. Some mornings my nostrils are filled with the sweet smell of cow manure.

You also have to be ready for skunks and dead animal smells.

If you move next to corn fields, or any type of crops, you may want to get your nose ready for crop dusters. Ever wonder why they call toots a crop duster, it’s because it stinks. Although, they are very fun to watch, the smell is horrendous.

2. Be Prepared to leave early

We live about 10 to 15 minutes outside of our little town, but to get into the city of Waco, it takes us about 30 to 45 minutes to get there.

It’s just a common practice for us to leave 30 to 40 minutes early, to make it to appointments on time.

So, if you’re into leaving your house 5 minutes before an appointment or meeting, country life may not be for you.

3. No Pizza Delivery

Where I live, there is not any pizza delivery or grocery delivery services available in our area. So, if you’re use to having everything delivered, you may want to find locations where places deliver.

We have lived in our home for over 10+ years, and have never had a pizza delivered. Which, is a little sad, because I love pizza and would love for it to be nice and hot when I eat it. Instead, we have to drive about 10 minutes to get the pizza and 10 minutes home, so it’s not freshly hot when we dig into it.

4. Wifi Sucks

If you move to an area that is not covered by big name internet companies, then you have to settle with satellite internet. Where I live, satellite internet is our only option.

It’s not terrible, but if you’re a big time gamer or need really fast internet, satellite wifi may not be for you.

5. Bugs

There is no way around it, if you live in the country, there will be bugs.

Flies, spiders, June bugs, and Ants are just a few of the insects I deal with on a daily basis.

If you don’t mind a June bug flying at your head, while you watch the beautiful sunset, then country life might be for you.

6. Creepy crawlers

Now, I have lived in the country for a very long time, and I still cannot handle spiders! 😫

Every Spring, here they come, stressing me out. They love to hide in my laundry baskets, so while I’m loading the washer, they can jump at me and give me a heart attack. 😱

You also have to be prepared for snakes. While, most of them are chicken or grass snakes, you still should be careful of Rattle Snakes and Copperheads. 🐍

Lastly, there are lots of field mice. If you plan on having land, it’s a good idea to have some cats. Of course, I have lazy cats but they do help with the field mice coming into the house.

7. Wildlife

If you have small dogs, like I do, you have to be careful of hawks and owls. They will swoop down and carry off little dogs. I know that sounds terrifying but it does happen.

While, I do love watching Owls hoot from the trees and watching all the beautiful wildlife you can only get from living in the country, there are animals you have to watch out for.

If you plan on having Chickens, watch out for Chicken Hawks. I cannot count how many Chickens we lost to Chicken Hawks.

Another wild animal you have to watch out for are Coyotes. I don’t see them too often, but I can hear them all night howling, so I know they are out there.

Wild hogs like to root around in fields as well, and they can be pretty dangerous, so stay clear of them.

Of course, this is for my area in Texas, I’m sure other States have a lot more wildlife to worry about. We have heard rumors of a Mountain Lion roaming around our area, so you never know what’s out there.

8. Sounds

If you’re use to hearing Sirens and Traffic to lull you to sleep, country life isn’t for you.

There is not any traffic noise or sirens but you will get plenty of Crickets serenading you to sleep.

As I mentioned before, you will here coyotes howling all night long.

I love all the sounds of the country, but if you don’t like waking up to the sounds of Roosters crowing, you may want to stick to sirens.

9. Bad Weather

So, the weather isn’t worse in the country, but when there is bad Weather, you have to be prepared.

Where I live, we do not hear the Emergency Sirens, so we have to rely on the Weather Announcements and watching the Radar. If we see bad Weather approaching our area, we start preparing for it.

You also have to prepared to lose internet in any bad weather, so I like to have a radio with batteries, just in case.

I also like to keep plenty of candles and flashlights on hand for storms. If the electricity goes out in the country, it is dark. There aren’t any street lights or any type of generated lights.

9. It really is wonderful

If you can get past all I have mentioned above, country living really is great!

Sitting on the patio after a long day, watching a cotton candy sky as the sun sets.

Watching fireflies and an abundance of bright stars, light up the night sky.

Falling asleep to peace and quiet.

Picking wild Plums and enjoying nature with my family.

There are so many things I could share about living in the country, but I think y’all get it.

If you live in the country, I would love to hear your favorite part of country life or any advice you would give.

The Not So Perfect Side of Party Planning

I love planning parties for my kids, but it never goes as planned.

My son recently turned 16, so I decided to throw him a dive-in movie sweet 16 birthday party. The plan was to have a retro movie themed party with a movie by the pool, so the teenagers could float and enjoy the show.

I spent months planning and organizing this party for him and his friends.

I had the whole party planned out in my head and I had hoped that everything would work out smoothly.

Well, you would think I would have learned after so many years of planning parties, things don’t always go as planned.

Pictures always make everything look so perfect, so I have decided to share my dive-in birthday party, with the not so perfect moments.

You Can’t Control the Weather

When planning an outdoor party, you are faced with the challenge of not knowing what the weather will bring upon you.

The sun was shining, and there was no chance of rain, but the wind decided to blow at gulf speeds.

I decided to use foam mounting strips to hold everything down, tablecloths, decorations and etc.

The movie screen was a bit more difficult to hold down. The screen was falling and blowing in the wind, but we made do with zip ties.

Oh and the balloons, the balloons I spent so much time blowing up, never even made it to the party. I had planned on having the walkway to our pool lined with a ton of balloons, some of which were light up balloons, but the wind had other plans for the balloons. Most of the bunches of balloons I filled with helium, never made it out of the house. 🤦‍♀️

Then, we had the Texas heat too deal with. It may have only been 98 degrees but it felt like 110 degrees.

I like to have everything set up before the party starts, but because of the wind and heat, I had to hold off on setting up the candy and cake. So, that threw me off my schedule, but I had to suck it up and move on with the party. 🤦‍♀️

You Always Need More Seating

So, after the party started, we had a little more guests than planned. Of course, I did not have enough chairs, so people were left standing while they ate. 🤦‍♀️

So, as someone with anxiety, I freaked out. I started anxiously searching for more chairs, which made me miss out on mingling with the guests.

Teenagers Will Be Teenagers

So, after frantically searching for chairs, I decided to get back to the party.

I then found out that some of the boys were using foul language in the pool with smaller children present.

I may have lost my cool a little bit and threatened to cancel the party if there was anymore cussing. 🤦‍♀️

Then, after you lose your cool, you have to move ahead with the party. By then, some people had already left the party, leaving me with enormous guilt for letting my temper get the best of me.

As we are getting ready to cut the cake and the teens are exiting the pool, I notice none of them have towels.

My son was in charge of inviting his friends from school, but he neglected to tell them it was a swim party. Some of the boys were literally swimming in their blue jeans. 🤦‍♀️

Needless to say, every single one of my beach towels were used that day and had to be washed. 🤦‍♀️

Everything That Can Go Wrong, Will Go Wrong

I spent hours making a sideshow for my son, with his sixteen years of pictures. I had music saved to go with the slideshow as well.

We had planned on having it set to the outdoor TV, to play while the guest ate their food.

So, that didn’t go as planned. The music would not work and I spent way too much time trying to figure out how to fix it. 🤦‍♀️

Everyone did get to enjoy the slide show, just without the music I had planned.

Then, we get to the main event of the birthday party, the movie by the pool.

First, we did not plan how we were renting the movie. We had to get a tech savvy guest to help us rent “The Meg“. That took about an hour, half the guests have left by now.

We finally get the movie going, we get in the pool to float and watch the shark movie, but I forgot to charge the laptop that was playing the movie. 🤦‍♀️

The movie was cut short, and needless to say, the party was over.

At the end of the day, my son said he had a great sixteenth birthday and he didn’t even care that it was not perfect.

I didn’t get to take that many pictures of my son and his friends, because of stressing and worrying about everything being perfect. Instead, I should have sat back and relaxed and enjoyed my son’s sixteenth birthday.

We get so caught up in everything being just the way we planned it, we forget to just enjoy the moment. These kids don’t care about perfection. My son would rather I be calm and collective, then a raging maniac trying to make everything go the way I planned it in my head.

Don’t let pictures deceive you, I’m sure there are stories just like mine to go with all those beautiful pictures.

Enjoy the little things in life and just let all that perfect non sense go.

Leave me a comment if you want to learn more about the dive-in movie.

Happy Mom’s Day

This Mother’s Day is extra special to me.

Why, you may ask, makes this mother’s day so significant?

First of all, I am amazingly blessed to still have my mama for another mother’s day.

This past year, my sweet mom, had some very serious health problems. I spent many hours praying for her to “come back to us” and to begging God to ” wait a little longer“, before taking her Home.

God heard my prayers and I am so thankful to still have my mom here to celebrate another mother’s day.

I know some great women that have lost their moms this year, be thankful for every moment you have with your mom.

Don’t think about all the work that goes into making your mom feel special on mothers day.

Now, that I am a mom, I truly realize all my mom did for me growing up. So, one day to show her my appreciation, is nothing compared to the stress I caused her.

Secondly, I am beyond thankful to have my children to pamper me for Mother’s day.

I have had to watch so many amazing parents lose their precious children, and my heart hurt with them.

I know, most of us moms, just want to sleep late, have a clean house, and be pampered.

I want that too, but I also want my kids to spend every moment with me on mother’s day. With no complaining.

This year I pray with all my heart for the mama’s having to exist during mothers day without their mama or their child.

I pray they God comforts them and heals their broken hearts.

Lastly, I am so thankful, to have an amazing husband that will stay up all night smoking a Brisket for me to eat on mother’s day.

My husband makes sure I have an amazing day, and appreciates me by letting me rest on mom’s day.

I know, there are so many single moms raising their children all alone. They are the strongest women and they make it looks easy, but I know the weight of world must be heavy on them.

I admire all you single moms out there, having to be the mom and the dad, you’re the real VIPs of mother’s day!

So, Happy Mother’s Day to all you amazing moms! I hope you all have the best day! No matter what you’re going through this mother’s day, just know, you are not alone.

Cerebral Palsy does not Define her

As most of you all know, my daughter Ciara has Cerebral Palsy, but that is not what defines her.

Cerebral Palsy is defined as “a condition marked by impaired muscle coordination (spastic paralysis) and/or other disabilities, typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth.”

Because of her disability, she cannot walk out talk, but she does not let that stop her. There is so much more wonderful things about her other than her disability.

Here is a list of what makes Ciara so special and proof that cerebral Palsy does not define her.

She loves EVERYONE!

She has a special excitement for life.

She takes pride in everything she does.

She loves her job and never complains.

She enjoys it when she is given responsibilities or chores, so she can prove she can do it.

She loves to cook!!

She has the biggest heart and really does care about everyone she knows.

She worries about her friends and prays for them.

She is obsessed with music, her favorite singer is George Straight.

She listens to everything she hears and absorbs every word like a sponge. She can know a song after only one time of listening to it.

She knows and understands her disability.

She knows how to work her disability and is quick to tell people “I am handicapped“, as a rebuttal.

She is a sensitive soul and can get her feelings hurt easily.

She sometimes feels sadness because of her disability.

She wishes she could do what others her age can do.

She longs to be a mother.

Her maturity level is that of a 12 year old.

She has a special innocence about her.

She hates her hands and feet, because they don’t do what she wants them to do.

She feels embarrassment from her disability, such as drooling, having an accident or because of the lack of hand control.

Her “best friends” are people who treat her like a regular human being.

She doesn’t like being spoken to like a “baby”.

She has an “attitude“.

She startles easily.

She can read and communicate via messenger.

If you are one of her “best friends”, she will text you every day.

She loves attention.

She tries her best at every single thing she does.

She always wants to help others.

She loves sweets!

She loves coffee!

She smiles through the pain.

She struggles every day but remains happy.

She loves Disney and is saving her money to go to Disney land.

She has an old soul and enjoys watching old murder mysteries.

She loves going to the lake and camping.

She gets so excited when she learns something new or masters a new goal.

She forgives but she doesn’t forget.

She loves the Lord and looks forward to the day she will “walk” with Jesus.

She is my hero.

She has so many people that love and adore her.

She has a mom that will advocate for her everyday of her life.

Of course, there is so much more I could share about my sweet girl, the list could go on and on.

CP may affect her body, but it can never take away her beautiful mind and heart.

I encourage you to get to know people with disabilities and don’t let their diagnosis define them.

Sensory Toys at Five Below

So, I love me some Five Below. I find myself browsing their website multiple times a month, looking for new items.

If you are not familiar with Five Below, they are a budget friendly store, and their prices stay Five dollars or below. They do have products that are in their “Five beyond” section, but usually it’s worth the price.

I love looking at their new inventory they get in stock and recently saw that they have sensory toys.

Sensory toys help children that have sensory issues, hand control problems, and kids that fidget a lot.

Now, I’m not showing you fidget poppers, because, honestly, you can get them for $1.25 at the Dollar Tree.

So, here are the great sensory toys I found at Five Below.

Gravity Sand

This gravity sand rainbow set looks like so much fun, I would enjoy this as an adult. For my daughter with Cerebral Palsy, this helps with hand control and gaining strength in her hands and arms. I think this would be a great sensory activity for any child.

Sensory Toy Bin with Sand and Water Beads

This is so cool! Any special needs mom has seen their special kiddos play with bins similar to these at therapy sessions.

There is different themes you can choose from. The one in the picture is Dinosaurs but they have other options. Online they were sold out of the other ones, but I know at the Waco, Texas location, they had a bunch of them on the wall.

These would be great for hand control, or just to keep them busy for a little while.

Zen Garden Sensory Tub

So, this one might be better for older kids or teenagers. There is a choking hazard warning about the small parts.

I could see my Ciara having fun creating a Zen Garden and also getting therapy in her hands at the same time.

Pair this with some calming music, and maybe, mom gets some zen relax time as well.

Pug in a Mug Sensory Toy

How cute is this?? This would be a great calming tool, or a long grocery line toy.

It not only strengthens little hands, but surprises them with a cute little pug as they squeeze the toy.

Rainbow Ramen

Okay, so I’m not sure what this toy does, but it looks cool. If you have this toy or if you purchase this toy, please leave me a comment, I would love to know what it does for sensory.

Sensory Palm Popz

These palm popz are new to me, I have never seen these type of fidget toys.

My son has ADHD and he loves fidget toys! I am excited to get him one to try.

Sensory Fidget Cube

This fidget cube would be great for adults as well as kids. I know for me ,personally, I fidget when I am nervous. So this would be a great calming toy for anxiety.

Of course, there is a lot more, I just shared some of my favorite sensory toys.

I am not an affiliate for Five Below, this post is only to share sensory friendly toys with other moms. I hope you enjoyed my post!

Let Go and Let God

I recently had to learn the hard way that you cannot always trust people in this world.

Last week, as I sat in my car waiting for Ciara to get off work, I was approached by a young man. He was asking for donations for a substance abuse program in exchange for banana bread. Substance abuse hits home for me, since I have family that have suffered from Substance abuse.

I preceded to inform him that I did not have any cash on me, but he presented his Square card reader and explained that he could accept debit cards.

I assumed you had to have a legitimate business or organization to have a Square account, I guess I was wrong.

I confirmed with him I wanted to donate $5.00 and I picked out my banana bread. He then thanked me and he was on his way.

I , honestly, never suspected anything and I was happy to have a snack while I waited for Ciara’s shift to end.

Well, I never even got the chance to open the bread, because I was alerted by my phone that I had a Square receipt for $220.00!!

My heart dropped and I felt a rush of panic! I felt this had to be wrong, but upon checking my checking account, I knew I had been scammed.

I immediately called my bank, while fighting the tears back. I canceled my debit card and disputed the charge but I was informed it could take up to 120 days to receive the money back.

Now, I am by no means rich, and that hurt me financially. That makes the pain in my heart hurt even more, knowing that he could do easily take from a mother just trying her best to survive.

I sat in my car crying for the remainder of the time. So many emotions flooded me, stupidity, regret, anger and sadness.

I wanted to find him and throw the banana bread at his head. I wanted revenge, I wanted my money back but mostly I wanted to believe this was just some accident. I wanted to believe that people are good and would never be so cruel.

After learning what had happened to me, people asked me ” Why would you do that?” And I heard ” Never trust ANYBODY!”

I also had an outpouring of support from my friends and family.

Yes, I feel stupid for my decision but I was raised to be a good Christian woman that helps others. Does God tell us to only help the people we know and trust, no He tells us to help all in need. I won’t quote the Bible Because I am terrible at memorizing scripture, but I KNOW what it says, and His words tells me to be loving, generous, kind and sympathetic to ALL.

I feel sorry for a person that feels they must steal from others. I feel sorry for their soul but I am not their judge. I will pray for them and I must forgive, for my soul.

I choose to continue to help people, to the best of my ability. I learned a tough lesson but I will not let this harden my heart.

I learned that I am blessed to know people that would go looking for this man to try to get my money back. I learned there is good people in this world and there is bad people in the world, but evil never prevails.

Hopefully, I will get my money back and be able to move on from this experience.

My only advice to give is to use caution when trusting some people but don’t let the evil in this world harden your hearts. Let’s show this world good always wins!

Trying to Keep up with Trends

With all the new social media apps, it’s no surprise that we get caught up in all the new “trends“.

For me, personally, I am always trying different makeup products or changing my skin care routine because of newtrends“.

A new trend that I am kind of obsessed with is decorating my house for every holiday, and searching Dollar Trees for the “trending” products.

As I was attempting a St. Patrick’s Day yarn wreath, and failing repeatedly, I asked myself “Why am I doing this?” I live in the middle of nowhere, who is going to see this wreath??

It was then that I realized that I was not making the wreath for fun, I was doing it because I saw someone else make one.

I took a step back and analyzed all the things I do that don’t bring me happiness.

So needless to say, I did not finish the wreath.

I realized I do love decorating my house for every holiday, but I don’t have to do everytrend” I see.

Life is already stressful enough, we need to stop letting social media add more stress to our lives.

Do what brings YOU happiness and skip the rest!

Cute Valentines Breakfast Buffet Ideas

This Valentines we decided to stay in, instead of fighting for a table at restaurants.

I decided to make it special for my family by making a big breakfast v-day buffet, with a Charcuterie Board, Big Red floats and Cupid hot chocolate.

We definitely had a Sugar rush but isn’t that what makes Valentines fun, seeing how much you can gain in one day 🤣.

I know I am a day late, but maybe these will give you inspiration for next Valentines Day or even just a romantic dinner with your special someone.

Heart Eggs

I bought my husband a griddle last year for his birthday and he absolutely loves using it to cook for us. I also found an accessory kit with cute heart shaped egg rings.

So my husband made heart shaped fried eggs, and they were adorable and delicious!

Pink Heart Pancakes with White Chocolate Chips

My husband also made heart shaped pancakes with the same egg tool.

I prepared the pancake batter with just regular buttermilk pancake mix. Then I added some pink food coloring and some white chocolate chips. My husband poured the batter into the heart shaped egg ring, and voila, we had some amazing heart pancakes with strawberry syrup on top, yum!

Heart Cinnamon Rolls

This was my first time trying this with store bought cinnamon rolls. You just unroll the cinnamon rolls and shape them into hearts.

I melted the prepackaged icing that comes with the cinnamon rolls and added some pink food coloring before drizzling the cinnamon rolls with icing.

I honestly, didn’t even get to eat my cinnamon roll before I was full, but I think they were pretty good and pretty looking!

Big Red Floats and Hot Chocolate

So, my son had some friends over yesterday so I decided to make big red floats for the boys. I also had some heart shaped hot cocoa bombs I bought from the Dollar Tree, so, you know I had to use them. So, us girls, had hot chocolate with whip cream and sprinkles.

Valentine Charcuterie Board

Ok, so my mom did think my salami roses were little hats but I thought they were super cute. You can find so many videos online on how to make them. You just need salami and a champagne flute. I added some pepper jack cheese, crackers and of course chocolate covered strawberries.

My family and my son’s friends really enjoyed our Valentines Breakfast Buffet and it was fun making treats with my husband.

I hope you all enjoy these ideas and I hope you all had a VERY wonderful Valentines Day!

Let Me Introduce Myself

Since I have quite a few new followers, I have decided to reintroduce myself.

I am Jennifer, the mother of two incredible kids and wife to an amazing husband.

My husband and I met as teenagers and have managed to stay together over 20 years now. It has definitely been a long, bumpy road, but we have grown stronger as we have grown older.

My daughter, Ciara, is 22 and has Cerebral Palsy. She cannot walk or talk, but she is the strongest person I know and teaches me each every day how to live life to the fullest and enjoy every minute of life.

I was a “teen mom“, I gave birth to Ciara at 15. I have come a long way as a mother. The beginning of motherhood was a struggle, especially with a special needs child, but I have learned so much and thrive to help and comfort other special needs moms.

My son, Leland, is your typical teenager, full of teenage attitude. He can be the sweetest little mama’s boy and he is constantly making me laugh.

I am a minimalist mom on a budget, and I LOVE the Dollar Tree.

My life is chaos, my house is not “magazine worthy“, and nothing about my life is “perfect“.

I am a down-home country girl that loves Jesus, family, friends and my dogs.

I am a proud plus size woman, and I am obsessed with makeup and clothes.

I love planning events, baking and crafting, while on a budget. I really enjoy finding new ways to repurpose or to recreate things that I typically cannot afford.

And lastly, I love writing! I enjoy sharing with the world my ideas and ADVICE and I appreciate each and every one of my followers.

I hope to inspire, give support and encourage all of my readers.

Thank you for following my Perfectly Imperfect Plus Life!
